The Whole Lan-Yards...

Each year I served as coordinator, I ended up making something for the participants, the faculty/staff, or both.
This year it was lanyards for all - thanks to a pattern from Two Peas in a Pod Designs that I came across one day. I did not go as patchworky as her instructions, other than the star insert on each lanyard. Our theme was "reach for the stars" but I had a very limited amount of this fabric, so I just inserted a bit in to each lanyard.

I will say that this project really drove home the concept of different fabric quality though - the black pin dot and star fabrics were a bit softer to the hand than the solids (although they were the same price!) - and after sewing on them all for a while - and having to change out my needle THREE TIMES when sewing through the solids - I would best compare the rougher fabrics to sewing through sandpaper! I could "hear" the difference in the machine as I passed from the solid to the stars on each lanyard!
It is just a good reminder that I should remember to shop with my hands as much as my eyes when buying fabrics!!! I DO buy online - but usually manufacturers I am familiar with and fabric lines I have "pre-browsed" in stores.
I will be making more lanyards - I wear an ID badge/swipe card at work and now think I need more to change up my outfits - but I think I will choose my fabrics a little more selectively!

oh I don't have a witty post title tonight... just read it!
The post below is very photo heavy and contains not only the "booty" (fitting word for today - since it is International Talk Like a Pirate Day) from yesterday's shop hop - but also a few other goodies that have crossed my threshold in one way or another recently that I had not yet had the chance to show off.
We'll start with yesterday... three shop stops... three bags .... four pictures.
Fat quarters from our first stop, Chestnut Bay Quilting. This shop has a wonderful selection of batik fabrics and Civil War reproductions, and the owner also has some wonderful original pattern designs. The two little rolls were from a shop hop held previously - and were a little "bonus" gifty... the big black yo-yo is actually attached to the quilt underneath - more to follow on that in a future post.
Our second stop was Mt. Pleasant Quilting Company. They were celebrating their 'birthday' and had a tent sale with 50% off bolts and yardage. The pink dot to the right I picked up in the tent and will be a backing fabric.
The measuring tape fabric is a new fabric line - sorry I don't know the name right now and the yardage is upstairs. When I first spotted it there were only FQ's on the shelf (and only 2 left of those) and the bolt was AWOL. The wonderful staff there went hunting it down, and I was able to get a yard off it without having to throw any elbows! :-) I ran into another quilting/Lions Club friend there... which was great fun. We are already making plans to have our own mini one-day retreat with a small group locally. That should be fun - and maybe something we can do this winter.

At our third stop, Material Rewards Quilts, I spent a lot of time just going through the entire shop very slowly. The previous two times I had been in the shop it was their Christmas in July - and so the shop had always been very crowded.
I found some fun fabrics in here, including (L to R) the chickens for my neighbor, the white "glow in the dark" for Halloween and the Munchkin's bedroom, and some fabrics to make some 'candy corn' gifties. I also picked up this great Nativity fabric panel to do a wall hanging - will be fun to have the Munchkin decorate the hanging, as each element hangs from a ribbon on a button.
Prior to the shop hop, I had been dangerously surfing the web and checking in on a few fabrics I had been coveting. When they went on clearance, I went a little crazy....
These are mostly 1/2 yard cuts - I am planning some projects in orange and brown - and I just love them all.
Then I had to buy some border fabric for a project, and since QuiltvilleCreations.com was having such a great sale at the time, I picked up some other items as well.
And last but not least - this was a giveaway prize that I won from Quiltmaker magazine on their blog. They were giving away the fabric left over from making the samples from their latest issue I won the leftovers from Practical Magic, and when I won they told me I would probably have enough to make the pattern from the leftovers.
'Scuse me but there are nearly 12 yards of fabric here!!! 12 yards of yummy batiks!!! I think I will be able to make it - and then some!!!
So all these should keep me busy for a while... if nothing else I will be busy figuring out where to stash them until I am ready for them!
I did not take many photos at the quilt show -and did not pick up anything from any of the vendors. The few pictures I did take I will post tomorrow -they were mostly pictures of parts of quilts for future reference and inspiration.... do others do that, too or do you always photo the entire quilt? I think I only have 2 quilts full size shots - the rest are just little bits.

The Clothesline Shots
I am loving my clothesline this summer -not so much for drying laundry (especially since last time I tried that the one and only rain cloud in the sky opened up on my yard) but for getting wonderful shots of my completed flimsies. I don't have a big design wall or open floor space inside - so especially when my quilts are big, getting a good photo is a challenge. Don't know what I will do with any quilts I finish once the weather turns? Maybe a snowbound clothesline shot will be worth a try?! :-)
This flimsie above pairs up with the pieced backing below and I hope to have it quilted and delivered to Dad in mid-October when we go visit.
If you do a closeup look on the backing, you can see the tools on the fabric - I had to do a bit of creative piecing to get it wide enough - and then had to piece again when I mismeasured the first insert... but I like how it turned out. It used up a few of the extra blocks I had made. The lighter large piece of fabric near the bottom is brush strokes so looks like it was paintbrushed - a great fit with the tools.
Thanks again to Jill for her fabric shopping - and then sending me the extra piece of the dark rust that she had bought for herself so that I could eek out enough borders for the top, and extra for the back.

Fast Forward One Month
This has turned into this:
(or what you can see of this - it is much larger!)
Unfortunately the block formation method I am using does not allow for a seam allowance to enable the unsashed tesselation I fell in love with a month ago. I believe that a paper pieced version of this block might allow that - but I had already committed to this method in a big way (like in 120 blocks big) before I realized the situation.
A shipment of fabric from my personal buyer Jill that was destined for the back now moved to the front -and lots and lots of sashing was added - increasing the quilt size by nearly 18 inches side to side, and 21 in length. I still have enough for the back - although I did need to "reorder" from Jill to finish up the borders all around. This is now big enough for a twin sized bedspread I think - although I have not made final measurements yet.
It's been more sewing than I originally envisioned - but I am still loving the colors and the scrap-bustyness of it all, and can't wait to give it to my Dad in person when we visit in October.
A bit late for the August birthday (Happy belated birthday, Dad) but I like in person deliveries best.
More pics to follow when I can hang it up outside and get a full length shot on the camera instead of on the cell phone!
Then to figure out how to quilt this one!

Shop Hop
So last week I got to go on my 3rd annual "one woman shop hop" - last year I went a bit crazy and did this. The year before it was this.
This year I got a bit of a later start. Due to a picnic the night before (at which a dear friend announced her engagement and I started planning a wedding quilt), I slept in a bit. On and off torrential rains, and the need to pick up a package from my personal shopper Jill at the post office and bring it home to open it before departure, put me about 45 minutes behind schedule.
Early on I made the decision to stop at only 2 shops instead of 3 or more. I was flying pretty much without a list (some would say without a clue!) and was keeping an open mind.
The first thing I was looking for was fabrics to go with this tool fabric. Or so I thought. The package from Jill had contained the three fabrics to the right - which I could not have matched better! They are perfect!!! These will help to piece the backing for this quilt. But I wanted just a little bit more contrast, so picked up the green and the blue. There is enough of the green to use as the binding, and I will put in just a smidge of the blue in the back.
So I continued to browse the store - Mt. Pleasant Quilting Company - and these just fell off the shelf into my arms and right over to the cutting table. They were so new in the store that mine were the first cuts off each bolt. Super soft flannel - yum! And I love these colors.

One more quarter yard cut of this great constellation fabric to make a pillowcase cuff for the Munchkin, and I was done here and back on the road.

I hit a few more rain showers, and then it was HOT and HUMID the rest of the day. It was very refreshing to pull into Sew Pieceful and be offered a glass of lemonade while browsing. Such awesome people at that shop!!! Love them!
I found a super duper special bargain there! I was looking for fabrics to do a baby quilt for Toshi and Miyuki and wanted something very "English language" with the alphabet, but with soft colors. We don't know if it will be a boy or girl but I did not want to wait until after the baby is born (November) to do something.
This bundle jumped off the shelves at me (lots of jumping fabric that day!) - and was 50% off. I thought it was a FQ bundle (16 fabrics) - but when I really looked it was 1/2 yard cuts! Woo hoo!!! I can do front and back and then some!! (oh -and before I figured it was 1/2 yard cuts I also picked up a piece of the text print out of the remnant bin.)

Last but not least, I picked up a few novelties:
I figure I do have a son entering Kindergarten, so teacher fabric is always good to have on hand. And it IS 6 months until Christmas!!! :-)
I finished up the day with a buy 1 get 2 free summer shoe sale at Bass. :-) Oh -and a long meeting. But it was all worth the trip!

Return to Wonderland
This is a quilt along I did with Shellie using Pat Speth's Sunny Lanes pattern and more of the Moda Wonderland - or what I had not already used in Jill's quilt Sibling Revelry. Shellie did hers in more vintage fabrics, while I went bright and bold. I love them both!
The backing on this will be a fun pink on pink that I found at an awesome "yard sale" - pun intended!!! Shellie and I had great fun - making multiple trips from that sale to the ATM and back to the sale!!!
So once the summer heat subsides a bit, and I can reclaim a bit of the living room floor for doing some sandwiching, I hope to turn some of these flimsies into finished projects!
PS - these were some of the fabrics from the big sale. Most of these got shipped off to Jill, but the two on the far left I kept. The pink -and some awesome soft green - were purchased on a return trip and I have not taken photos of those yet. The gold will be the back of Just Me and My SIS.

Shop Hopping While You Wait...
I am not good at waiting - never have been. When it is time to go somewhere, I tend to be ready to leave early, and get antsy while waiting to leave. I am better once I am there -even if I have to wait there - but I am happiest when there is little to no waiting involved.
Pre-Christmas I try to keep myself busy so I don't go crazy waiting.
Pre-birthday is easier now with "Birth Month"... but still is a long wait from February 1.
So why oh why did I think signing up for a Valentine's Day swap with my friends in TranQuiltIty would be any easier? I am haunting the Post Office as much as The Munchkin, who has suddenly gotten impatient for his February issue of Your Big Backyard.
Luckily for me - some friends stepped into the gap while I waited.
First it was Rhonda with my great "First Place" gifty from her recent giveaway:
And then it was Shellie with my Christmas present (ok - so it has been a while since we have gotten together.. I gave her a ChrisBirVal Gift today -so I guess we are even!)
Good thing she loves turtles as much as I do - and bumblebees - and orange! These are YUMMY fabrics!!! The picture just does not do them justice.
And then - to make waiting even more bearable - Shellie and I decided we were due for a shop hop. I needed to bring Zoe in for her annual checkup, and figured it would be a good time to introduce Shellie the shop next door. And then Shellie wanted to take me to three other quilt shops - one that I had been to about 8 years ago, and 2 others that I had never been to. Add in a wonderful chinese food lunch - and a run through Target - and we had an AWESOME day. We are just far enough north that the big east coast "blizzard" (SnOMG is my favorite tag for that storm) did not affect us - and we were moving into stores quickly enough that the cold temps were not that bad. We got to meet up with a fellow TranQuiltIty member, Maureen, and a 25Weeks member, Linda.
And I found some awesome things:

And one more FQ, which shall remain hidden until further notice because it's purpose is too obvious and I need it to be a surprise. I am not going to try to explain what all these are for - I will just refer back to this post once I have the finished project ready to go - either for me or for some special recipients i had in mind when I saw these fabrics.
One last little thing - I made these fun little pockets while "waiting" - and the tutorial for them is here. Quick, easy, could be no sewing involved depending on your approach - and great little gifties for Valentine's Day - or any special day depending on your fabric of choice.
Enjoy.

The gift is in the eye of the receiver
This holiday season I had two different people ask me what I wanted - and I don't think they expected the answer I gave them.
One was my brother - "what do you want for Christmas" he asked.
"old shirts" - I said - "old shirts I can take apart for the shirting fabric for a quilt project I have in mind."
He may have thought it was crazy - but this is what was under my tree:
Boy do I love my brother! There were four shirts rolled up in this little bundle!
The next bundle was a "thank you" gift from our bride and groom from Japan. Toshi offered to bring me something from Japan... and I sent him a link to a fabric store that carried Japanese style fabric and said "if you can find something like this..."
Well - they did - and then some!!! WOW!
The bundle before I opened it - even the furoshiki is great fabric!
The contents all stacked up.
The smaller fabrics - probably about 1/2 yard each.
The larger pieces -I think about 1 yard each.
Most of these are cottons - but have a nice texture to them like a homespun or a "raw silk".
Now to find the right projects for these!!! Hmm.....
Thanks everyone for thinking outside the box!!!!

Fabric Roller Coaster
So perhaps you can imagine my excitement in finding one of the fabrics ON SALE on Hancock's website last month. The price was right -and I quickly ordered enough to do the backing of this quilt, plus some for pillowcases. I added in a yard of another fabric to qualify for the free shipping promotion, and then I was all set.. or so I thought.
My first warning should have been that the fabric was not just "on sale" - it was "on clearance"- and I am learning now that with Moda... when it's gone, it's gone.
So when the single extra yard arrived, and not my backing fabric, I quickly checked my order status and saw "backordered" - which I pretty much took to mean I was not getting it... ever.
Now Hancock's has a clearly stated backorder policy:
"How are backorders charged?
All items backordered are not charged until the item has been received and shipped from our warehouse. There are no additional shipping charges on backorders. If an item remains on backorder for over 60 days you will be notified. We will also notify you with an expected ship date.
If an item is backorder cancelled what can I expect?
This message appears on the invoice in the unfortunate event that a backordered item will no longer be available. Often times we are left with this as the only option due to the manufacturer’s decision to not re-print certain fabrics. All charges accrued in this event will be promptly reimbursed. "
60 days - wow. I did not have 60 days as I wanted to get this quilt finished up for Christmas. So I went out and found an alternative backing fabric.
Still, however, I was curious and kept going back to my order status with Hancocks. So imagine my surprise when suddenly it changed from "backordered" to "in warehouse" and "item scannned"... and then - yesterday - to "shipped". Woo hoo - I thought!
But without a shipping confirmation or tracking number I had no way to know when this order would arrive... so I contacted "customer service"...
... and this is the response I received:
"I apologize for the inconvenience and that the notice was not received. The following items have been discontinued by the manufacturer and we will not be able to ship the backorder.
M 32107 25 12 MODA MOMO WONDERLAND GARDEN PARTY JAM ROSE BROWN
29.88 12/14 Item Canceled
Please let us know if you would like to arrange a substitution for the discontinued item."
Um - item canceled? Then why does my order status still say "shipped" instead of "backorder canceled"??????????????
I guess in some world those two terms mean the same thing? Just glad I was able to find a backing fabric that works well - and somehow I don't think I will be ordering again from them any time soon.

Lucky 13 ... or turtle luck

Or maybe you didn't but they surprised you with something anyway?
Not sure which is the case - but the upshot was that, according to the note I got today (Friday the 13th), I was lucky #13 in a drawing and won some fabric.
Not just some fabric - I should add - but turtle fabric.
And not just turtle fabric - but batik turtle fabric!
It's a medium green sea turtle on a lighter green background - I will have to get a photo and add it some other time - as I am not sure where the camera is right now.
Thanks Marj!

Some of it was on the list...
I started the day, much like last year, with a quick stop off for gas, a run through the PO to mail something to my folks and favorite pizza guy, and to the local grocery store for some travel munchies.
Again I arrived at the first shop before it was supposed to be opened. Luckily for me - they were teaching a class so the staff was already there and the doors were already open and they all said "come on in" (ironically they were teaching a "stack-n-whack" class!!!)
I was on a 3 part quest during this shop hop - fabric for my Halloween quilt, fabric for a baby quilt (looking for a very specific fabric line with turtles in it) and turtle body fabric for another quilt (last year I picked up turtle shell fabrics on my hop - so this year I wanted to take care of the bodies.
The only fabric they had of the line I wanted for the baby quilt is the lotus flower. The brown "reptile skin" is for my turtle bodies (I am keeping those the same and changing out the shells), and the other two are just for my stash.
The best part? Besides the STELLAR customer service and friendly atmosphere - was the "Christmas in July" coupon that got me 25% off everything.
I arrived at my second stop around 11:15. They were doing a Christmas in July demo day, so the parking lot was full. The EMT vehicle in the parking lot made me a bit nervous, but one of the attendees had gotten woozy and they were getting her checked out.
I was less successful here on the list -they did not carry the baby quilt fabric line at all, and since my other list items were already checked off, I started into dangerous territory - stash browsing. I picked up a tiger print FQ since the school I work at is the Tigers (as is one of my alma maters).
There was a digital scale right next to the basket of remnants, so just out of curiosity I picked out a few and put them on the scale - 1/4 lb. So I added a few more - and a few more - and a few more - until I was at 1.03 lbs. My plan was to use these for some different baskets for my craft show - and there were even some good big pieces to use for linings (some of these have already been cut and prepped for this purpose). These are all the pretties!!!
It was probably about 12:15 when I left there and headed to shop #3 - Sew Pieceful Quilt and Gift Shop. I drove through a bit more construction - on the highway this time - and had my lunch. Once again I was foiled in my quest for the baby quilt fabric - so browsed their large selection of novelties, looking for fabrics that were calling my name.
The ladies in this shop are a hoot. They had just ordered their lunch - looked like chicken fingers and fries - and were eating as I browsed. I joked that since I seem to be making this an annual thing, and seem to get to their shop right around lunch time (did last year, too) that I should call in my lunch order ahead and eat with them. The owner's response - "sure!" I love quilters!!!
My 4th stop was a new one - or was supposed to be. I was going to drive 10 miles past my ultimate destination and go to The Village Sampler. I had my map and directions all printed out and it looked pretty easy -until I got off the exit and the map route showed one way, but the instructions and the signs showed another. I could not find street names on the sign posts and got all twisted around. I finally saw the route number of the road I needed to be on to get to my final destination, turned around to head west instead of east, and called my mobile GPS (Hubby at his computer) to be sure I could get there from here - so never did find the shop. Turns out that I was right next to it at one point but so focused on the roads and finding my way that I did not even see it. Oh well -maybe next year.
So instead I headed into Corning. My meeting started at 3:00, and I parked the car at 2. I quickly walked over to my "stop #5" -now #4.
This shop was about 4 blocks away from my meeting place - it's one of those "Market Streets" in a touristy city with lots of boutiques, cafes, ice cream shops, antique shops, and more. All old buildings and storefronts with lots of character. I crossed over the street and headed back on the other side, remembering there was a cool antique shop on one of the corners on my way back (sorry Terri, I did not have time to walk further in the other direction to hit that bead shop we read about).
So as I am window shopping on my way back (bypassing the homemade fudge -that took willpower) - and come across none other than a stamping store!!! One that was not there last year (I guess they used to be above the aforementioned bead shop but moved shortly after I was through town last year).
I have not been in the market for much in the way of stamping supplies of late - The Mercantile keeps me pretty well stocked, and I have been slacking in the stamping activity department anyway so really could not justify purchasing much there.
So I made it back 5 minutes before the meeting started, and about 15 minutes before the sky opened up! It was clear and muggy by the time I left to head home, and after a quick stop for dinner along the way I got home around 9:45. I would have stopped at the local JoAnn's - especially since I noticed on their sign that they are moving and having a moving sale - but I forgot which exit and by the time I figured it out I would have had to go 4 more miles down the highway to turn around and go back. I was getting tired, so I decided I had done enough for the day.
But now I know that exit number -for next year.
