Eeek...

I just peeked at the calendar -and the reality of today's date just sunk in to my brain...

63 days until Christmas - and although I have only one item left on my list of things to "buy" - my list of things to make includes all to many that are not yet "done"... I started early this year - and more ambitiously - I might add - but it's still creeping up on me.

36 more days until Thanksgiving -not so pressing but I want to give one Christmas present at Thanksgiving, so that's at the top of the pile.

9 more days until Halloween, and I still have not convinced the Munchkin to wear a costume.

and 6 more days until the next installment of my Phoenix Mystery Quilt - and I have not done the next steps yet...

Birth Month - Day 2

One of the first things I heard this morning was the Munchkin looking at the completed Birth Month calendar and saying "look at all the nuners (numbers) - great job Mom - you got all the nuners on the pockets"!

Day 1's pocket had a Take Along Thomas Engine for the Munchkin, a new toaster for Daddy and a new vacuum for Mommy (I know - not very exciting for Mom and Dad, but just wanted to show the Munchkin that not all the presents will be for him). Actually - all those things were not in the pocket -but I told the Munchkin they were supposed to be there - and we all actually got them on Jan 31st. But I think he is getting the idea.

Day 2's pocket held a note that said "a new book for the Munchkin" and he got Mark Teague's How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon - which we read this morning, but it did not seem to help with the medicine taking struggle.

We looked at the whole calendar, and Daddy was sure to show him the special birthday pockets with the names on them. "We gotsa lot of birthdays" he said!

Just need to make and add another pocket at the bottom for the 29th of February - I think it will attach with a button and be bigger - for that extra special bonus Birth Month day!!!

Birth Month - Day 1

Welcome to February - better known as Birth Month in our household. With upcoming celebrations on the 18th, 22nd and 28th - the countdowns have begun.

The intent of my countdown wall hanging was:
A: to have it on the wall by February 1st and
B: to have little presents tucked in the pockets for the munchkin to discover.

Well - it is not on the wall (still need to add a few bead embellishments and get DH to hang the hook for me) and the munchkin discovered one of his surprises last night by accident.

So I guess we will see what February 2nd brings - besides that dang groundhog and all his publicity!

Stay Tuned for more Birth Month drama!

Executing a concept

Sometimes I get these ideas in my head - and then start flying without a net, or creating without a pattern.

I've been wanting to do a "countdown calendar" since my son was born in 2005. See - my husband, my son, and I all share February as our birth month. Hubby was born at the end of the month, so he has always celebrated all month long. Piggybacking on this, I decided that all three of us should celebrate the month, and decorate the house accordingly.

Being February, I wanted to avoid the hearts and flowers of Valentine's Day, but wanted something bright and cheerful. I started by making a denim tablecloth and bordering it with large squares of multi-colored fun fabric - in lime, yellow, red, orange and bright blue. We have used that as our Tablecloth of the Month for 2 years now.

So the countdown calendar had to be something as bright and fun. I had some remnants, and went looking for more of the same fabrics. I ended up with complimentary fabrics and was able to put together most of the project yesterday.

Each day is a 3 inch square pocket - with special Happy Birthday fabric for the pockets of our birthdays. I have number and letter beads to hang from the points of each flap, and the whole thing will have a lime green binding around it and hang on the wall in our dining room. We plan to put little notes or gifts in the pockets and open them up as the month goes along. The all red pocket on the bottom of the 2nd column is Valentine's Day - it will have a little heart charm added to it. I also plan to make a little pouch/pocket that will button onto the bottom with a "29" on it that we can hang every 4 years.

I have never worked with prairie points - so this is new for me. I chose not to topstitch them as the piece was already rather busy and I did not want the distraction of the extra stitches. "Most" of them are folded and pressed straight. A few went wonky in the assembly process.

The only other thing that I did that I would do differently was that I added 1/4" to the height of the blocks that the pockets are stitched to (each pocket is lined) - so you can see a bit of that out from under the corners of the prairie points. Not having worked with those, and wanting to leave a bit of room for large (and small) fingers to get into the pockets, I thought it would be a good idea. In hindsight, I would not do that. Luckily I had enough of the blue stars to use for those squares instead of the scraps I was planning to use - so at least it looks coordinated.

I will post pictures later this week or early next week when it is all ready to hang.
